Is there a more misleading phrase I in our industry than 'conventional I printing?' Sure, as digital printing continues to gain steam in all packaging segments, we need to have separate terminology that differentiates between printing processes with and without plates. But how can anyone look at what's happening across the board today in flexography and refer to it as 'conventional?' The fact of the matter is that flexo has provided the backbone of the label and flexible packaging segments for decades. Yes, the presses from years ago relied heavily on skilled operators to maintain registration and keep colors dialed in. And cumbersome changeover processes made them platforms best suited for long runs.
