TLMI (Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute) has published a statement against the impending Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), or "Card Check". TLMI has sent its statement to all members and written letters to every U.S. senator and congressional representative. rnIn a recent press release, TLMI stated, "Under Card Check, the secret ballet election process within unions would be eliminated, thereby eradicating privacy rights and making workers more vulnerable to the possible threats of coercion and intimidation. Card Check would allow federal arbitrators to write two-year labor agreements defining every detail of how employees will work in the event that relevant parties have not reached agreement within 120 days-a small timeframe when negotiating first-time contracts. This could serve to incentivize union negotiators to ensure timeframes go beyond 120 days to guarantee arbitration, and could thereby eliminate any incentives to negotiate in good faith. Card check would additionally deprive employees of their opportunity to ratify their first contract, negating any opportunity for employers or employees to challenge said contracts. Card Check dramatically increases penalties on employers for certain violations of the National Labor Relations Act without increasing penalties on unions for violations they might commit."
