Napoleon Bonaparte's demand for a code that soldiers could use to communicate silently at night inadvert-ently resulted in Braille being invented. Charles Barbier's effort to please the Corsican general didn't quite go to plan but was taken on by Louis Braille in 1821. The rest, as they say, is history and today Braille considerably improves the lives of millions of blind people. Braille's invention has been occupying the minds of those in the packaging sector for the last five years. From 2005, all new pharmaceutical packs had to incorporate Braille. From last month, existing packs had to come into line with the EU regulation as well and now, in theory, all pharmaceutical packaging incorporates Braille.
