It's difficult to know quite where to start with the news that Selfridges is ridding its stores of single-use plastic water bottles. The retailer said it's part of a drive to reduce the amount of plastic in the ocean and they have teamed up with Marine Reserves Coalition and the Zoological Society of London. Selfridges is instead encouraging shoppers to bring their own water bottles to fill at a drinking fountain in its London store. While it might be admirable to start a campaign tackling pollution in the sea, could it have taken a slightly different approach? You might argue that they shouldn't just stop at water bottles? Flexible plastics are also found floating in the sea while all sorts of litter is sitting on our beaches ready to be washed out - from glass bottles to aluminium cans. Let's have atotal wipe out of packaging, regardless of the material. That will sort the oceans out.
