So, farewell then the European Union's Circular Economy Package. The scrapping of what appeared to be a major plank of EU's environmental policy has delighted some key figures in the packaging industry. A few jaws were dropped last summer when the EU set out its revised targets for recycling with levels expected to hit 80% by 2030. That appears to be on hold as the EU appears to be keener, in the short term, to focus on business growth. That seems sensible given that there's a lot of work that still needs to be done to repair Europe's economy. But opponents shouldn't get out the bunting just yet-the EU has indicated that it wants to replace the package with something "more ambitious".
