Synergy Health might not be a household name, but in the healthcare industry the group is held up as the leading manufacturer of hygienic wipes that are used by the NHS, health centres and care homes. In 2007, the company invested £3m in a state-of-the-art non-woven converting machine, cutter and flow wrapper for its Oldham facility, consolidating its disposable wipe production operation. "Previously we had several smaller machines, each manned by an operator," explains Garry Wilson, manufacturing director at Synergy Health. But while the wipes were being produced and flow wrapped far more efficiently following the installation of the new equipment, case packing was still being carried out manually - a task that required half a dozen operators.
