An ombudsman to police the major supermarkets will only be effective if it does not have to rely on complaints from suppliers, according to accountants Grant Thornton. The firm said the ombudsman, proposed by the Competition Commission (CC) after its two-year grocery market enquiry, needed powers to "proactively investigate" the grocery supply chain.
