Firms looking to move their packaging into sustainable materials should consider "all the alternatives", according to a food industry expert. Alan Campbell, packaging and manufacturing manager at Campden and Chorleywood Food Research Association, told delegates at last month's Foodex Meatex show that it was still unclear what constituted sustainable packaging. "Traditional polymers can use less energy to manufacture than some 'bio' materials, which is perhaps one definition," he suggested. "Paper could also be considered as not sustainable, because it takes a long time to grow trees." Campbell said the price gap between traditional and 'green' polymers was closing, but urged firms to check whether the new materials could actually be processed by existing equipment, and would meet regulations.
