The milk sector, with its dominant dairies and packaging suppliers, lends itself well to the in-plant model, and so it has proven for Nampak. The firm operates five UK dairy in-plants - two for Dairy Crest, two for Robert Wiseman and one for Aria - and Crick says the approach offers major environmental benefits, particularly its ability to cut the transportation of empty milk bottles to a minimum. Locating blow-moulders next to dairies, with a hole in the wall linking the two, removes the need for lorries to ship the bottles, as they are simply moved through on conveyors.
