Marks and Spencer claims to have made an 80% reduction in the number of single-use carrier bags given to customers since introducing a 5p charge at all of its food stores.rnSince it began charging on 6 May, the chain has handed out 70 million fewer bags than it would otherwise have done, it said. It has also donated ￡200,000 in profits from bag sales to environmental charity Groundwork.rnChairman Stuart Rose said: "It's fair to say that M&S' carrier bag charging policy has provoked a lot of debate, but these figures show that the overwhelming majority of our customers support charging."
