German filling equipment giants KHS and Krones exhibited radical machine designs for bottling carbonated soft drinks at last year's Drinktec show. Both the F1 from Krones and the DRV-VF from KHS do away with the front table, instead using neck-handling starwheels. But there are significant differences. While the KHS system uses a bottle-lifting system - albeit simplified - during filling, Krones claims to have gained output advantages by lowering the filling valve to meet each bottle. Modular build on the Fl means that customers can synchronise the machine with different rinser and capper options, also using the neck-handling approach. Both fillers use servo drives, but in the Krones concept, this is decentralised, so that each starwheel has its own drive. Electronics, too, are decentralised, giving each valve independent controls.
