Nature-Works PLA, the developer of a biodegradable corn-based resin for drinks packaging signed up its first clients: Biota Water of Colorado and Naturally Iowa Dairy. The firms are using the polylactide (PLA) resin to package spring water and milk respectively, and both companies feel that using 'planet-friendly' packaging will give them a clear advantage in the eyes of many environment-conscious consumers. NatureWorks PLA is part of the huge Cargill Dow corporation and it is targeting short shelf life, cold-fill markets such as water, juices and dairy drinks with PLA. The material offers full transparency, so consumers can see the product, and is also flexible enough to form complex shapes on the same blow-moulding machines used for PET.
