So what's all the fuss about RFID? Tags are attached to goods, and the data is read by a scanner, for use in supply chain systems. Don't barcodes do that already? Up to a point. RFID tags can be read from a distance, they can be read more quickly than barcodes, and several can be read at once. They also label things more precisely; they identify the actual pair of shoes, not just the style. "EPC (the RFID code) identifies the unique instance, not the type," says Mike Lyon, the global business manager for GS1, the body which defines those standards.
