The modern retail landscape includes more convenience stores, more specialist shops that focus on limited product lines and more superstores with larger inventories, all open for longer hours. Meanwhile, the average family unit is no longer two parents and two children as one-or two-person households become the norm. Populations in most Western countries are ageing but have greater disposable income, are more aware of health issues and spend more on preventative medicines. Time pressures are leading to more food being consumed on-the-go and consumer tastes are' eclectic and always changing. According to Pira International in its report, 'The Future of Digital Printing for Packaging 2', by 2012 the digitally printed test market will grow to Euros 90.2m, the sample market will increase to Euros 35.5m and the point-of-purchase (POP) market will rise to Euros 100.2m worldwide. There will be growth in every category of packaged product for almost every type of consumer, with sales reaching Euros 350bn worldwide by 2008. All this, says the report, will stimulate growth in digital printing. Pira predicts that six areas of technology related to digital printing for packaging will play a vital role over the next five to 10 years. These are: inkjet printheads, printers and inks; RFID (radio frequency identification); laser die cutting and packaging workflow.
