If you thought self-heating cans were a futuristic invention, then think again. Sitting amongst other examples of historical packaging at Crown UK's 25th anniversary exhibition at its Wantage facility is a wonderfully preserved Heinz kidney soup can which warms up in much the same way as recently developed self-heating packs. "See, nothing is new," says Kelvin Pitman, Crown Technology's licensing and marketing/innovation director. And he's right. Created for use by soldiers in the Second World War, this can reflects how hard developers have always worked to advance packaging technology, and Crown is still just as diligent.
