Wooden transit packaging faces stiff competition from plastic and corrugated alternatives, but strict new export standards are expected to ensure the benefits of wood will continue to be recognised. Timber is a naturally renewable source that does not involve the emission of carbon dioxide in its manufacture; it is recyclable, repairable, and, at the end of its life, it can be burnt for energy. Thus it is claimed to be the most environmentally responsible option for palletising and transit cases. It is often the most appropriate solution for bespoke transit packaging requirements. Wooden packaging is also hygienic because, unlike plastic or corrugated products, wood can be heated to high temperatures to kill any bacteria and bugs. Properly maintained wood provides poor living conditions for bacteria.
