From October 1, all medicines - including those in blister and strip packs - must be child-resistant. This is when the implementation of the statutory instrument, entitled the Medicines (Child Safety) Regulations 2003, will come into full effect. Recognising BS 8404, a protocol testing standard for flexible packaging, the regulations say that all blister and strip packs for products containing aspirin, paracetamol or more than 24mg of elemental iron in the form of tablets, capsules, pills, lozenges, pastilles, suppositories or oral liquids must be child-resistant.
