We congratulate Liz Gyekye on her excellent article on the real possibil ity of the UK ending up with a glut of recy clable materials due to China's impending introduction of an internal packaging recy cling target of 70% (Packaging News, March 2012). Currently the UK "recycles" 606,000 tonnes of obligated plastics packaging per year, of which 170,000 tonnes is recycled in the UK, and 430,000 tonnes is exported, mainly to China. By 2017, in order to achieve Delia's 57% recycling target, the UK will be required to recycle 1,221,435 tonnes of obligated plastics packaging.
