It might be a tad optimistic to suggest that there will be a sea-change in public opinion on packaging, but in 2011 the industry was singled out as a possible saviour in the battle to combat the food waste mountain and feed the world. Step forward Julian Carroll, former chief executive at Europen. In his address at the Save Food congress at Interpack, he was among many who highlighted the role that packaging can play to help feed an ever-expanding population that is predicted to reach 9bn in 2050. And he reckoned that the issue could mark a turning point in political attitudes to packaging - after all, the congress was organised in conjunction with the United Nations. "Packaging has for many years been a Cinderella of the food industry, dreaming of being asked to the ball. Today I feel like packaging is finally being asked to dance," he said.
