There has been a lot of hype in recent times around x-ray inspection and its potential to replace metal detection on packaging lines, owing to its ability to detect a wider range of contaminants. But the reality is that although x-ray inspection is being adopted more widely, business is still brisk for metal detector suppliers. "We've seen demand for our products increasing rather than diminishing in the last few years," confirms Phil Brown, sales director with metal detector manufacturer Fortress Technology. And Chris Keenan, sales manager with Selo UK, which distributes Anritsu's metal detection and x-ray equipment in the UK, says that metal detectors are seen more frequently than x-ray systems in food production factories in the UK. "However," he adds, "the balance is starting to shift as more suppliers introduce x-ray systems as a replacement for metal detectors when they are upgrading or introducing new production lines."
