Multinationals Silgan and Graham Packaging are to merge in adeal that will create one of the world's biggest packaging manufacturers. Silgan is paying around $1.3bn in cash and stock to buy the rigid plastics business, which is currently majority-owned by the world's biggest private equity house Blackstone. The deal will create a global business with 17,000 staff and sales of $6.2bn, producing closures and rigid plastic and metal packaging in 19 countries across north and south America, Europe andAsia.
