The increasing prevalence of counterfeit drugs has been a major factor in the development of sophisticated Track and Trace systems. The need for these will become even greater in the future with new regulations, such as the European Parliament's Falsified Medicines Directive. Track and Trace products have been made possible thanks to the emergence of high resolution printing technologies that can print all types of code formats including alpha numerics, barcodes and monochrome graphics, with the ability to be read by automated vision systems. This is particularly important for 2D Datamatrix codes, which are able to include a huge amount of information in a concise format, but require coders with a printing resolution of at least 600dpi.
