Prime Minister David Cameron has waded into the plastic bag argument with a threat of legislation to force retailers to slash the number of plastic bags they hand out. Cameron praised the efforts of some retailers to reduce plastic bag use but he warned it was "unacceptable" that the number rose in 2010. His comments, made in an interview with the Daily Mail, came just days before Wales introduced its obligatory 5p charge on single-use carriers. He said: "Companies like Marks & Spencer have considerably reduced the use of bags by charging and then donating the money raised to charity. But progress overall went backwards last year. That's unacceptable and we need to do better." The Carrier Bag Consortium retorted that Cameron's stance was based on "green wash".
