With an estimated global value of just under £90bn, corrugated is, and has long been, the packaging industry's largest individual sector. According to the CPI, in volume terms the UK market con-sumes around 2.Sm tonnes per year (including imports). The vast majority of it is used as transit packaging, mostly into the retail sector, making it, until quite recently, the least visible consumer-facing application, but also providing it with the bulk of an annual 80% recovery rate of post-consumer waste for recycling.
