Steady progress has been seen in waste recycling in Japan since the Containers and Packaging Recycling Law became effective, while the total amount of waste generated has scarcely been reduced with the wastes annually managed in Japan amounting to more than 50 million tons. Considering that the recycling itself is very costly, it goes without saying that the waste source reduction will be a critical issue we need to address on top of recycling issues. As seen in the fact that packaging containers are used for almost every kind of commodities, the source reduction of packaging wastes is a big challenge. New ideas and efforts are desired to tackle the critical issue and satisfy both consumers and business entities.%容器包装リサイクル法施行以来，わが国では廃棄物のリサイクルが着実に進んでいるが，ごみ処理量は毎年5,000万トンを超えて おり，ごみ総量はほとんど減少していない（図1）。
