Professor Jaakko Poeyry passed away on Sept 8 in Helsinki at the age of 82. He was born in 1924 in Sodankylae, in Finnish Lapland. He was one of the most important pioneers of Finland's international success after the Second World War. After completing his matriculation examination in the spring of 1942 he volunteered for the army, and soon rose in the ranks. On his way back to the front, after completing his officer training behind the lines around Midsummer in 1944, Jaakko Poeyry was seriously wounded by a barrage of enemy artillery fire.
