As Seppo Keränen, head of Finpro's trade centre in India, points out, India is a huge country with immense variety: its 28 states and seven territories operate with considerable independence in many respects. "There's no way to gain a foothold over the entire country - you have to start from a corner somewhere", he says (article on pages 384-386). "In India, everything is either possible or impossible", declared Keränen when he took up his present post in New Delhi almost three years ago. India is a huge country, and its population - currently running at 1.095 billion - is growing so fast that it is expected to overtake China's population soon after 2030. In terms of area, India is the world's seventh largest country. It has no fewer than 23 official languages plus 1,600 regional languages and dialects. The numerous religions include Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism and Buddhism.
