Although much progress has been made on the modifications produced on fibres by refining ('refining effects"), little is known about the mechanical stresses which generate them ("refining actions") and their inter-relations. The first step of a study about admitted or potential bar stresses is here developed through the analysis of their effects. Being radial fibre compression an important and obligatory component of all the applied stresses, it is here isolated as a singular or "pure" action. A PFI laboratory mill with null slippage between roll and housing was used, comparing the basic and technical properties of fibre and pulp respectively, with those of the standard process, which adds shear stresses, on the whole softwood bleached kraft pulp and their fibre fractions. Under the experimental conditions tested, the refining with pure compression stresses attained the same strength level as the standard, mainly due to the flexibility effect of internal fibrillation, although at less speed and with better energy efficiency. It is showed that the influence of fines on the strength can be substituted by extra internal fibrillation up to a high refining level, gaining also in drainability.
