I will admit to having a strong dislike for "how-to" books that over-simplify complexnactivities such as reference service. This is not what Ford has done with Crash Coursenin Reference. This text is intended to provide a self-directed overview of foundationalnprinciples, practices and tools for effective reference service. Her stated intention was toncreate a textbook for people working in libraries who do not possess graduate training innlibrarianship. This is a significant distinction: this was not envisioned as a graduatentextbook, and on its own I would find it inadequate for this purpose. Some confusionnsurrounding its intended audience might arise from the author's use of "librarian" as angeneric term for those working in libraries, rather than library professionals, even thoughnshe defines how she uses this term
