摘要

An overview of satellite air interface evolution, in light of new initiatives to consider satellite networks as an integrated part of the 5th generation of communication networks, is presented. The study of non-terrestrial networks has identified a variety of satellite communication services. Despite that, the adoption of air interface solutions over satellite links faces several challenges that require in-depth analyses and possible iterations in design trade-offs. This has created new incentives for several on-going or planned R&D projects in support of new standardization. While some preliminary observations can be made based on recent studies, further analyses are required to reach a consolidated view.
