Increasingly, emerging economies show enormous potential in a global knowledge economy (Lofgren and Benner, 2011). For example, reverse innovation (i.e., developing ideas in an emerging market and expanding it to wealthier markets) (Govindarajan, 2012) shows how the nature of innovation in the global economy has been transformed. Besides, the demands of innovation ecosystem and technology infrastructures require firms to evolve into new forms of value chain network organizations (Bartley, 2007; Mani & Moody, 2014). The increasing prevalence of networks, alliances, public goods, and industry-wide standards has provided critical resources to clusters of firms. As such, many resources are no longer limited to firm specific domains but now extend beyond value chain boundaries (Park and Hong, 2012; Hong and Park, 2014). Creating shared resources and values external to firms and communities, like macro-infrastructures, drives entrepreneurial innovation, economic development, and global market growth (Van de Ven, 1993; Porter and Kramer, 2011). Therefore, changing collaborative roles throughout the global value chain are crucial to these vital trends (Fagerberg and Srholec, 2008; Fjeldstad et al.( 2012).
