摘要

The 14th annual Global Studies Association conference took place at Toledo University, in the industrial heartland of the us. Or more properly, what was once the industrial heartland. Certainly auto, steel, rubber and other manufacturing still takes place, but it's a shadow of its former self. Unemployment, and abandoned factories and homes cover the urban landscape. With Detroit to the north and Gary to the west, Toledo mirrors the region's deindustrialization. It is often characterized as a national problem, but the forces of globalization intersect with local realities.
