Awareness about the global burden of disease highlights an important relationship between the needs of the desperately ill in economically disadvantaged countries and the need to ensure adequate compensation for the research and development of new medicines. Although the UN officially recognizes the Right to Health as a fundamental human right, 1 argue that it is simultaneously undermining its official position by enabling wealthy nations to take advantage of unfair bargaining positions in trade negotiations. Where such agreements target the epicenter for the creation and distribution of medicines for the globally disadvantaged, they must be viewed as particularly reprehensible.
