摘要

The Lower Tertiary of the deep-water Gulf of Mexico is among the leading oil and gas exploration plays in the world due to recent petroleum discoveries in the Alaminos Canyon, Keathley Canyon and Walker Ridge protraction areas. Reservoir units occur across a wide swath of the deep-water Gulf and consist of thin Eocene to Oligocene distal turbidite sands underlain by a very thick, sand-rich Paleocene-Eocene package called the "Whopper Sand". At this writing, 19rnexploratory wells had penetrated this thick, high-quality, Lower Tertiary sandstone reservoir interval. Twelve of these wells have discovered oil and gas, with reserve estimates for the deep-ater Wilcox trend ranging from 3-15 billion BOE.
