The Pinedale Anticline is located in the northern portion of the Green River Basin (GRB), an area of complex structural patterns that was affected by both thin- and thick-skinned deformation between Late Jurassic and Late Eocene time. Major bounding elements include the Wind River and Gros Ventre basement blocks to the east and north, respectively, and the Western Overthrust Belt to the west (Fig. 2.1). These three elements have overridden the margins of the basin along thrust faults, suggesting that the interior of the province was affected by compression for extended periods of time. The Cache Creek (Gros Ventre block) and Wind River thrusts dip at about 3 0-45° to the north and northeast, respectively. Th'e'se faults have displaced Archean basement rocks as much as 30,000 ft vertically and 5-10 miles horizontally. Thin-skinned thrusting along the western border of the basin has emplaced highly deformed Cretaceous and Early Tertiary sedimentary rocks up to 10-15 miles laterally over Tertiary basinal deposits.
