Reservoirs in Pinedale Field exist in the Lance Formation and the upper portion of the Mesaverde Group (Ericson Sandstone, upper Rock Springs Formation). Production comes from very fine-medium grained, non-marine sandstones with varying degrees of natural fracturing. Gross sandstone within the Lance Formation, the primary reservoir interval, is as much as 1,600 ft. Pay definition is commonly based on log data (Fig. 3.1). Experience has shown that sandstones with gamma ray values < 65 API units, density porosity > 8% and RT levels > 40 ohms will produce at economic rates after treatment. Using these limits, operators have defined net pay of 100-500 ft in wells drilled to date. Water saturation in these sands is usually less than 35%. A type log for a productive well in the Mesa area (north Pinedale Field) is shown in Fig. 3.1. Marked on this log are the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary and the top of sustained gas flare within the upper Lance. Also indicated are a number of higher quality gas-bearing sands. This log includes approximately 1,400 ft of the upper Lance (~900 ft within the reservoir portion of the formation) and shows the high degree of interbedding between sands of varying quality, siltstones and shales.
