Recent surveys of unconventional natural gas have identified continuous, basin-centered gas systems as one of the most economically important resources in the world (Law, 2002). Such accumulations, in fact, have received much attention over the last few years, especially with regard to Laramide (Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary) basins of the Rocky Mountain region. Accumulations identified as basin-centered gas now contribute roughly 15% of total U.S. natural gas production, with the great majority of this coming from basins in the Rockies. The main elements in a basin-centered gas system (BCGS), as described by Law and Dickinson (1985) and Spencer (1987), include the following: 1) a regionally pervasive accu-mulation (hundreds to possibly thousands of square miles) in low-permeability, gas-saturated reservoirs; 2) lack of a downdip water contact and any single, updip trapping mechanism; 3) presence of gas-prone source rocks proximal (e.g. interbedded with) to reservoirs; 4) possible presence of overpressure, due to more rapid generation of thermogenic gas than can escape from low-permeability reservoirs; 5) top of the accumulation coincides with narrow range of thermal maturity (e.g. vitrinite reflectance values between 0.75-0.9), below which reservoirs are gas saturated. As so defined, BCGS accumulations are highly layered, with gas confined to reservoir intervals over a very thick (up to 10,000 ft) interval.
