Structural Styles of the Scotian Slope: Discussion and Examples

Structural style changes downdip from shelf to slope within the greater Scotian Basin. Regionally, on a very general basis, three separate structural regimes can be defined: shelf, shelf break and slope. Shelf structures are dominated by normal faulting, related both to growth-type structures and to reactivated basement faults. Structures associated with the shelf break are predominantly growth-type faults, with both down-to-the-basin and antithetical geometries and, frequently, deep-seated basement block faults. Slope structures, meanwhile, include growth faults seaward of the shelf break, and salt-related features in more downdip positions, with rift-related basement faulting present in some areas. Salt movement along the slope has continued from roughly the Middle Jurassic down to the present. In general, faulting along the lower shelf and upper slope is enhanced by the presence of a large-scale overpressure cell, which affects lower Missisagua and older strata.
