Economic deposits of copper, exploited since pre-Columbian time, encouraged the initial study of the Midcontinent Rift System (MRS.) Oil and natural gas exploration began in the 1980s with the acquisition of more than 5,000 miles of 2-D seismic data by Texaco and Amoco. Only three deep wells were subsequently drilled in this very large geologic province, one each in Kansas, Wisconsin and Iowa. There are fewer than 10 additional wells that add to the understanding of the petroleum potential of this province. Exploration was abruptly terminated by the decline in oil prices in 1986. Oil seeps, oil and natural gas shows, adequate source rock, reservoir-quality sandstones, and multiple trap types have been identified in the outcrop, on seismic, and in the few significant wells that have been drilled. Extensive seismic data acquired during the early 1980s remain largely unevaluated. The MRS remains an attractive exploration target in central North America.
