Development of Western Canada's supergiant oil sands resource has entered a new phase of growth that seems destined to continue through the end of the present decade. This expansion has been driven by a number of factors, some of which include: improved economics; technological advances; progress in geological understanding and reservoir characterization; a strong market with considerable growth potential; and an encouraging and well-informed provincial government (Alberta) that has supported development while seeking to balance the needs of environmental protection and reclamation. Given the success of development projects to date, all of these factors appear likely to continue their positive influence.
