摘要

The Cook Inlet Basin of south-central Alaska is a forearc basin containing an estimated 1.5 trillion tons of coal in place. This coal was deposited mostly within the fluvial to tidal facies of the Tertiary Kenai Group. The most prospective coals for coalbed methane (CBM) in the Tyonek Formation are the bituminous rank coals within the onshore portion of the northern Cook Inlet. These Tyonek coals occur in single beds up to 50 ft thick and have a net strati-graphic thickness of hundreds of ft―all at depths of less than 6,000 ft. Adsorption isotherm and measured gas content data indicate that the coalbeds are generally gas-saturated. Published estimates show that the northern Cook Inlet contains about 500 billion tons of bituminous coal above a depth of 10,000 ft. Canister desorption data, mostly from measured onshore well samples, indicate that these bituminous coals have a gas content averaging about 230 standard cu ft per ton (scf/ton) on a dry, ash-free (daf) basis. The significant potential of the bituminous coals of the onshore portion of Cook Inlet Basin is indicated by the estimated 3.6 trillion cu ft (Tcf) of CBM in place within the 72,000-acre Pioneer Unit alone. Subbituminous coal in the onshore portion of the Cook Inlet Basin (based on onshore well samples) contains an average of about 60 scf/ton (daf) and is now thought to be gas-saturated. Published estimates indicate about one trillion tons of subbituminous coal in place throughout the Cook Inlet Basin. In 2001, considering both bituminous and subbituminous rank coal across the entire Cook Inlet Basin, the Gas Technology Institute indicated that there are about 245 Tcf of CBM in place. Compared with other CBM productive basins, the Tyonek coal has a comparable gas content, a relatively shallow depth to coal, and a generally thicker net coal section-all in close proximity to a major gas pipeline. However, previous attempts at producing these favorable prospects have been unsuccessful. The lack of success is attributed to formation damage during drilling and completion and/or failure to adequately dewater the coalbed as required for significant CBM production.
