A First Report of Significant Coalbed Methane Production from a Paleozoic Coal, Kerr Basin, West-Central Texas

Coalbed methane production was reported in 2002 from a 25-ft thick coal and carbonaceous shale zone that contains 14 ft of net coal from 2270 to 2295 ft in the Rendova Loretta 1 well in the Kerr Basin, west-central Texas. The coal contains 140 standard cu ft of gas/ton (as received basis) and, when flow-tested, produced as much as 210 mcf/d of gas. The gas is composed of 96 mol-% CH_4, 2.5 mol-% N_2, 0.6 mol-% CO_2, and traces of C_2 to C_6 alkanes. Regional correlations and palynology indicate a Permian (Wolf-campian) age for the coal zone. Maceral analysis of a composite core sample from the coal zone indicates that the coal bed is composed of about 86% vitrinite, 10% inertinite and 4% liptinite with a coal rank of high-volatile B bituminous and a moderate to low grade of 37 wt.-% ash yield (dry basis) and 2 wt.-% moisture (as received basis). During flow testing, after one week of pumping out the acid- and fracture-treatment water, the main coal zone immediately produced gas, indicating that the coal is likely saturated with gas. This well is believed to be the first coalbed methane test that has produced a significant―and a likely profitable―natural gas volume from a Paleozoic coal in Texas. The results suggest coalbed methane or gas shale potential may be present in the Pennsylvanian to Permian strata of the tectonically related Val Verde and perhaps the Marathon and Marfa foreland basins.
