Geologic Factors Associated with Natural Gas Hydrate Deposits

The formation, extent and type of natural gas hydrate deposits often depend directly upon geo-logic factors. These factors relate not only to geochemistry―temperature/pressure conditions, the availability of methane, pore fluids, etc.―but also to such influences as tectonic setting, local structure, stratigraphy, sediment type or lithology, permeability distribution and the pore structure of the host material. Hydrate stability is sensitive to temperature and pressure, and these conditions, in turn, are frequently affected in profound ways by a number of geologic processes. Rapid uplift or subsidence, changes in sea level, faulting and fracturing, for example, all can have major impacts.
