Gas Hydrate as a Practical Energy Resource: Problems and Possibilities

The material presented in this chapter suggests several important conclusions regarding gas production from hydrates. Understanding of the conditions required for economic gas production remains at a very preliminary level at present, but is making significant (if somewhat scattered) progress. Such understanding will likely come from three sources: A) detailed analysis of hydrate deposits, resulting in practical knowledge of reservoir character, conditions and behavior; B] theoretical and numerical modeling of different production scenarios and reservoir dynamics; and C) field demonstration projects, where recovery techniques are tested on actual hydrate accumulations. Integrating the results from all three of these sources will be crucial for deriving and refining practical recovery methods. Nonetheless, a good deal of trial-and-error will probably occur before such integration is possible. Both national and international research and field testing efforts will play a major role in advancing the state of relevant knowledge. At the same time, energy companies are best situated to carry out actual production tests and to derive "lessons" from them.
