Russian geoscientists exploring for natural gas in permafrost areas of northwestern Siberia made the first documented discovery of naturally occurring methane hydrates. This took place in the late 1960s, during development of the Messoyakha gas field (Makogon et al., 1972; Makogon, 1988). Well log data, formation testing and other information from this field helped establish abase of knowledge for identifying and characterizing hydrate deposits elsewhere. Since that time, interest has grown steadily in such deposits. Continued research has greatly expanded our understanding of where and how methane hydrates occur. From a geological point of view, however, such understanding remains at something of an early stage, due to the fact that actual sampling has been limited.
