Canadian coalbed methane (CBM) potential remains in its infancy, with limited reported commercial production and few appropriately executed pilot programs or completion attempts. The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) covers a large portion of Western Canada and contains numerous major coal-bearing stratigraphic units. Combined gas-in-place CBM resources for the WCSB and several small, restricted basins in British Columbia has been estimated at approximately 546 trillion cu ft (Tcf) by the Canadian Gas Potential Committee (CGPC, 2001). This chapter identifies those geographic regions in Western Canada with coalbed methane potential and attempts to give a feeling for the wide variability of geologic and physiographic settings in which this potential might be realized. The major coal-bearing basins in Western Canada are characterized by four distinct play types, highlighting key geological and engineering parameters. This chapter also provides, where possible, a number of brief case histories for some of the more promising play areas. Given the high level of CBM exploration activity in Western Canada since 1999—and the encouraging data that are slowly becoming public from these efforts—it is apparent that CBM will soon form a huge new resource base for Canada.
