A coalbed methane play in the lower Almond interval is opening an area of undeveloped and possibly high reserve potential in the south-central part of the Greater Green River Basin. The play currently is concentrated in smaller areas in southwestern Wyoming, but the stratigraphy of the lower Almond may afford a significant area for viable CBM development. The coals are a part of the coastal plain sequence of deposition comprising the lower Almond facies of the Upper Cretaceous Mesaverde and occur as isolated intervals encased in the sandstones, siltstones and shales of this depositional sequence. Initial completion results indicate that the wells will produce at economic rates and have reserves that will allow developmental economic success. The estimated resource base for this play is roughly calculated to be in excess of one trillion cu ft of gas. Overpressuring in some areas will increase the reserves and attractiveness of the play. Certain specific data on the type of coal, its gas content, and permeability are not available at present, but should prove encouraging, based on initial well performance. Produced water can be handled so as to avoid undue production delays and afford adequate environmental protection.
