Coalbed Methane Potential of the Gulf Coast Region

Coal beds along the Gulf Coast are Paleocene and Eocene in age and range in rank from lignite to subbituminous at the surface; they probably approach high-volatile A bituminous at depth. Known net coal thickness in the Tertiary Jackson, Claiborne and Wilcox groups ranges from 3-28+ ft (1-9 m). The thickest Jackson and Wilcox Group coals are located in east-central Texas and west-central Louisiana (20+ ft; 6 m). Coal beds in Louisiana and Mississippi tend to be more numerous, but are generally thinner than coal seams in Texas. However, individual coal bed thickness in Louisiana and Mississippi may exceed 20 ft (6 m) in some areas In-place coalbed methane resources for the Gulf Coast region are difficult to assess, given the limited gas content data and published net coal maps. Previous estimates for the coal gas resources for the Tertiary in Texas to depths of 6,000 ft (1,800 m) may have underestimated the amount of gas in place. Accurate assessment of CBM potential requires a regional geologic and hydrologic evaluation of the key factors affecting coalbed methane producibility rather than evaluation of a smaller prospect area. Understanding the synergy among net coal thickness, structural setting, coal rank and gas generation, gas content variability, permeability, and hydrology is critical for delineating the areas of highest coalbed methane potential. Although major oil companies and larger independents conducted the initial coal gas exploration and development, smaller operators will play a progressively more important role in developing this potential resource in the Gulf Coast region.
