A three-layer structure is proposed to simulate a setup for terahertz wave generation and sensing in the near-field zone. A formulation is derived based on plane-wave decomposition of the dyadic Green's function, and the terahertz field generated from a Gaussian distribution of parallel dipoles is calculated. The dependences of the field distribution and the coupling efficiency to the free space on the system parameters and working conditions are analyzed in detail. It is demonstrated that a reliable one-to-one correspondence of the sample's dielectric properties and the measured terahertz field could be built up, and a high spatial resolution in imaging applications may be achieved.
