Producers of quality recycled paper must balance several factors, including the freeness of the furnish after refining and the degree of closure in the paper machine's Whitewater system. The process chemicals used and the customer's requirements— such as strength and printability—are also critical factors. For these reasons, retention/drainage aids (RDAs) are key tools for controlling wet end performance. One particular RDA—polyethylenimine—provides pa-permakers with the flexibility to meet or exceed quality and production goals.
